SUMMARY:Horton Cemetery Heritage Day Event
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Open Day – Saturday 12th September 2026 (10am-4.00pm)\nExhibitions\, presentations\, tours and an opportunity to meet researchers to find out about those buried in Horton Cemetery and the history of Epsom’s five asylums. Visit both the area around the Cemetery and the former Horton Chapel\, now The Horton Arts Centre. \nAt the Cemetery\, you will be able to park at Hook Road Arena. Stewards will be on hand to guide you to the bridle path which surrounds the cemetery. There\, you will hear and read stories about some of the 9000 buried within. \nAt the Horton Arts Centre\, you will find largescale displays\, telling the stories of others buried in the cemetery. There will be an opportunity to listen to short presentations\, given by our researchers. If you believe you have a relative buried in the cemetery\, we will be able to check this for you. \nAlongside our exhibition\, The Horton Arts Centre will be hosting the Freewheelers’ ‘Us and Them’ exhibition\, a fascinating and moving photographic exploration of shifting narratives around disability\, past and present\, experienced through a constructed ‘asylum hospital’ environment that visitors can walk through. \nThis promises to be a superb day\, bringing Epsom’s heritage to the forefront. Please join us if you can. \nThe Friends of Horton Cemetery is a charitable organisation whose goal is to bring dignity and respect to the memory of the many tens of thousands of mental health patients\, including war heroes\, who died within the Epsom Cluster of asylums.
