Join us at the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall on Saturday 23 May at 7.30pm. \nWe begin with Schubert’s Overture in D\, In the Italian Style\, composed in 1817.  \nSoloist\, Nicola Baigent\, will then give us Glazunov’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone & string orchestra & Tartini’s Concerto for Clarinet & strings.  \nWe finish with Mendelssohn’s wonderful 4th\, or Italian symphony\, inspired by the composer’s trips to Italy.

SUMMARY:Epsom Jazz Club - Alina Bzhezhinska & Tony Kofi
DESCRIPTION:This gig will see both a return for one of our artists and an “instrument first” at the club: Tony Kofi (who played his sax for us last year as part of Sharp Little Bones) will be joined by an album collaborator\, Alina Bzhezhinska – who will be the first musician to bring a harp through the Epsom Jazz Club doors. Composer\, recording artist\, band-leader and one of the leading and most musically creative harpists in the world today\, Alina Bzhezhinska won the Parliamentary Jazz Award’s Best Ensemble of the Year in 2024 for her group\, the HipHarpCollective\, and has collaborated with artists including Brian Jackson\, Chaka Khan\, Shabaka Hutchings\, DJ Spinna and Sly Johnson. Also no stranger to awards and high-profile collaborations\, Tony Kofi played Glastonbury last year as part of the new line-up of jazz funk legends Cymande\, and has in the past collaborated with some true greats – in particular Donald Byrd\, Eddie Henderson\, Abdullah Ibrahim and Ornette Coleman. SUMMARY:Epsom Choral Society Concert –  A Season to Sing
DESCRIPTION:A Season to Sing is a choral reimagining of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons by Joanna Forbes L’Estrange. \nIt weaves Bible verses\, poetry\, hymns\, madrigals and sonnets into Vivaldi’s very popular music\, creating a colourful and expressive musical journey through Spring\, Summer\, Autumn and Winter. It is bookended with Forbes L’Estrange’s own original settings of To everything there is a season. \nThe concert also includes two beautiful pieces by Ola Gjeilo and a mystical work by Morten Lauridsen.

SUMMARY:Epsom Jazz Club - Hannah Horton
DESCRIPTION:Hannah Horton \n  \nOur last gig this spring season sees the welcome return of award-winner and multi-instrumentalist Hannah Horton\, who in 2024 was our first baritone saxophonist to play at the club. She’s stopping by Epsom as part of the tour for her new album\, Stories on the Wind. Horton is a composer\, bandleader\, successful recording artist\, master of her principle instrument\, and is also accomplished on flute\, bassoon and clarinet. On top of a successful career playing many of the country’s top stages (including the Royal Festival Hall\, Barbican\, Ronnie Scott’s and the London Jazz Festival) Horton is committed to giving back to the community\, winning the Parliamentary Jazz Award for Education her work with J-Steps\, a collective supporting teenage female and non-binary jazz musicians that she founded. Hannah will be joined by the rest of her quartet: Sam Leak on piano\, Rob Statham on bass and Steve Taylor on the drums. \n  \nLine-up: \n  \nHannah Horton – baritone and other saxes \nRob Statham – electric bass \nSteve Taylor – drums \nSam Leak – piano
