A naturally witty composer\, it was entirely characteristic of Rossini to play with his audience’s expectations in this way. Most famous for his 39 operas\, it might also be no surprise that\, in this ostensibly religious piece\, the vocal writing is unashamedly operatic. \nIn this\, the great composer’s final work\, the music ranges from hushed intensity to boisterous high spirits and abounds with the memorable tunes and rhythmic vitality for which Rossini became justly famous. Their Saturday afternoon concert is a prelude to a week of recording an album in the church which they favour for its excellent acoustics. DESCRIPTION:£7 SCPT members\, otherwise £10\n£5 per person for groups of four or more \nAn illustrated talk by Andrew Plumridge\, architect and trustee \nAndrew attributes his love of churches to his time spent pumping air into the old organ at Burpham Church\, earning ten bob a time for weddings and nothing on Sundays. “When you’re pumping that lever up and down\,” he says\, “you have plenty of time to enjoy the architecture and pray for electrification!” \nAfter graduating as an architect he first took on the role of Special Projects Surveyor to the Cathedrals Advisory Commission\, working at Wells\, Exeter\, Lincoln and York\, before serving as architect to the dioceses of Oxford\, Winchester\, Guildford and Salisbury. He served as architect advisor to the Berkshire Churches Trust for 27 years and became a trustee to the Surrey Churches Preservation Trust in 1998. \nAlthough best known as an expert on architectural follies\, his talk will take us on a tour of amazing churches from around the world and some of the extraordinary man-made monuments to God. \nAll funds raised from Andrew’s talk will help Surrey’s church buildings via conservation grants made by the Surrey Churches Preservation Trust\, a registered charity run 100% by volunteers. We are looking for volunteers and trustees.

Daffodils\, lilies\, roses and cowslips all feature in the music performed by the choir under the direction of their conductor Mark Biggins. \nJoining them for this performance\, will be international prize-winning harpist Mared Pugh-Evans who will accompany them in the vibrant Choral Dances from Britten’s Gloriana. She will be joined by clarinettist Zoë Humphries to play Paul Reade’s Victorian Kitchen Garden Suite which many will recognise as the theme tune from the 1980s Victorian Kitchen Garden television series. \nTheir programme begins with the mediaeval ‘Sumer is icumen in’\, one of the oldest songs written in English. DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Horton Cemetery has been awarded a grant by Historic England for the Out of Sight\, Out of Mind digital\, arts-based project\, revisioning the life histories of patients in Europe’s largest asylum cemetery. Led by Dr Alana Harris on behalf of the charity\, we seek to recapture the stories of patients and create a crowd-sourced memorial\, overcoming historical amnesia\, neglect\, and inaction. \nAs a part of this project\, we are painting 900 ceramic flowers to commemorate the 9000 patients buried through regular arts-therapy-based craft workshops. \nAll welcome. Free of charge. \nThe event includes discussions about mental health past and present.
