Find out the mystery surrounding the first building of the shelter and how Epsom Council created the Ashley Road Deep Level municipal air raid shelter to attempt to protect the citizens of the sleepy suburbs from Luftwaffe attack during the Second World War. Constructed 50 ft underground\, the tunnels provided shelter to 1\,500 people. The last of Epsom’s air raid shelters which remains accessible. Spaces limited. DESCRIPTION:Ashtead Choral Society performs Petite Messe Solennelle by Rossini \nSaturday 4th November 2023\, 7:30 pm – 9.45pm \nSt Martin’s Church\, Epsom\, KT17 4PX \nConducted by Andrew Storey\, with soloists Lucy Cox (soprano)\, Susan Legg (alto)\, Adam Tunnicliffe (tenor)\, Philip Tebb (bass)\, accompanied on two pianos and harmonium by Stephen Ridge (piano)\, Simon Phillips (piano) and \n\n\nLucy Morrell (harmonium). \nIronically\, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle (Small Solemn Mass)\, is neither small nor particularly solemn! A naturally witty composer\, it was entirely characteristic of Rossini to play with his audience’s expectations in this way. Most famous for his 39 operas\, it might also be no surprise that\, in this ostensibly religious piece\, the vocal writing is unashamedly operatic. \nIn this\, the great composer’s final work\, the music ranges from hushed intensity to boisterous high spirits and abounds with the memorable tunes and rhythmic vitality for which Rossini became justly famous. DESCRIPTION:Epsom Choral Society sings Mendelssohn’s great oratorio\, Elijah\, with outstanding soloists and orchestra in St Martin’s Church in Epsom on Saturday 18th November 2023 at 7:30pm. \nFirst performed in 1846 at Birmingham Town Hall\, Mendelssohn’s Elijah is widely regarded as one of the greatest oratorios of the Romantic era. Inspired by the biblical account of the prophet Elijah\, the oratorio was composed in the spirit of Mendelssohn’s baroque predecessors\, Bach and Handel. \nUnder the baton of Julian Collings\, the performance will bring together a stellar cast of soloists\, including soprano Elizabeth Findon\, mezzo-soprano Judy Brown\, tenor John Findon\, and bass James Geidt.
