DESCRIPTION:The Epsom Symphony Orchestra brings you a Spanish Fiesta of music with compositions that reflect the vibrancy of this wonderful country. \nRavel’s Bolero is now famous as the music to which Torvil & Dean ice danced their way to a gold medal at Sarajevo in 1984. Most will also recognise Chabrier’s rhapsody for strings\, Espana\, inspired by the composer’s tour of Spain. \nAward winning Scottish saxophonist\, Richard Schofield joins us to play the Carmen Fantasy for string\, featured in several films. \nUnder the baton of our Musical Director\, Darrell Davison\, the fiesta is complete with Falla’s ballet music from the Three Cornered Hat & the ever popular Capriccio Espagnole by Rimsky Korsakov which is based on Spanish folk melodies.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the Saturday afternoon Music @ St Martin’s series a selection of talented musicians from Epsom College perform Schubert’s charming missa brevis. Schubert was just 18 when he composed this – no older than some of the students who are performing this youthful setting. Accompanying the College’s Chamber Choir is the String Orchestra and the church’s fine organ played by the Organ Scholar. Admission is by donation.

As Brahms himself said\, it is less a Requiem for the dead than one intended to comfort the living; less a work of religion than a work of humanity.\nMusically\, its carefully balanced architecture is matched by an equally firm musical structure. The Requiem unfolds as a gentle\, lyrical expression of consolation\, through rich melody\, untroubled sweetness and beauty\, into episodes of monumental power.\nThis choral performance of the Requiem will be accompanied by Brahms’ Tragic Overture\, a free-standing symphonic movement for orchestra.
